Red Sea Gateway Container Terminal begins trial operations
Feb. 14, 2010
President of the Saudi Ports Authority, Dr. Khaled bin Ahmed Bubshait has inspected the Red Sea Gateway Container Terminal (an affiliate to SISCO) at Jeddah Islamic Port. He was briefed on the Terminal's operation which began trial phase at the end of 2009.
The first vessel arrived on December 22, 2009. The project was completed in a record time despite the global economic crisis which has affected maritime trade. The project was completed in two years only, during which RSGT dug a deep water channel of 300 meters width and 18 meter deep capable of handling the new generation of cargo vessels.
The 1.8M TEU second-generation terminal is due to be fully completed by Q2-2010 and is expected to add 45% to Jeddah Islamic Port’s annual TEU capacity, thus turning Jeddah Islamic Port to set a firm footing as a hub port in Red Sea Coast for export and import of commodities and facilitate the flow of container handing at the Port.
RSGT has realized the importance of providing it's wharf with the latest equipment and devices. In this context, the Terminal concluded an agreement with the Chinese international cranes manufacturer ZMPC to provide the Terminal with eight quay cranes capable of handling two 40-foot containers in one lift, a 78-meter long lifting hook and an outreach for 24 containers. According to the agreement the Terminal would also be provided with 24 single-lift yard cranes of a maximum capacity of a standard 40 feet container and two double-lift yard cranes of a maximum capacity of two standard 40 feet containers.
It is worth mentioning that the Red Sea Gateway Container Terminal is the first container terminal to be fully owned and operated by the private sector at Jeddah Islamic Port, with a capital of some SR2 billion. This move would boost confidence in the role of the private sector in further pushing the march of comprehensive development in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
