Article Image February 7, 2010

The Saudi Ports Authority announced that between 50 to 60 percent of works on the new Ras Al Zour Port have been completed as 60 percent of the Port's water channel, which is 24 kilometers long and 175 meters wide, has finished. Work has also been completed on 50 percent of the Port's berths including three berths in addition to a fourth one designated for services. The port can accommodate ships of 50,000 tons deadweight capacity. According to the plan, trial operation would begin in August 2010 and the port will receive the first ship in December.
Ras Al Zour Port is located on the coast of the Arabian Sea, covering an area of 23 square kilometers. It is 80 kilometers to the north of the city of Jubail. The construction costs of this Port stand at SR 2.2 billion (around $586.8 million). It is being executed by China’s Harbor Contracting and Engineering Company. After completion, the Port will handle industrial materials estimated at 4,895 million tons annually, while minerals exported via the port would be 4,325 million tons and exports would stand at 660,000 tons.
The port's location was selected to serve mining industries planned to be constructed at Ras Al Zour area. These industries include phosphate and aluminum smelting complexes and complementary industries.
The Port's first phase of development was designed to mainly export phosphate and aluminum products. Within the frame of the Saudi Ports Authority future plans, commercial berths can be added to handle cargo from and to northern and north western regions of the Kingdom as the port will be linked with these areas through North-South railway project.
