New Gantry cranes arrived at JIP
Four new Super Post Panamax gantry cranes arrived at Jeddah Islamic Port (JIP) on Monday 10-8-2009. They were berthed at the new Red Sea Gate container terminal quay.
The cranes were manufactured by ZPMC in Shanghai, China. It is among 10 similar cranes to be delivered to the Red Sea Gate Terminal (RSGT). JIP would become the fourth port in the world to have equipment with similar specifications. They are specially designed to serve next generation container ships that can carry up to 13,000 full size containers. They are capable of handling two 40-foot or four 20-foot containers in one lift.
An additional two ship-to-shore cranes of the same type will be delivered within two weeks.
RSGT has received on June 2009 two ship-to-shore cranes. the new batch brings the total number of cranes being received to 12.
Operation of RSGT is expected to begin by the end of 2009, by which JIP will turn into a regional container hub and key port with high tech operational equipment.
The Terminal would have an annual capacity for 1.5 million container. The total cost of the project is estimated to be SR1.8 billion.
